Removal of the uterus (hysterectomy)

Such an operation can be an alternative to the conservative treatment of quite a few pathologies of the uterus in case a woman’s reproductive plans have already been implemented, or if the woman is in her menopause.

For example, uterus removal is the only long-term and effective treatment for adenomyosis (a type of endometriosis that develops in the muscle layer of the uterus) and other conditions.

When is hysterectomy indicated?

The indication for the surgery is indicated in case of the following diseases:

  • Hysteromyoma – if a woman is no longer planning a pregnancy, or in difficult cases when the symptoms cannot be eliminated by other methods;
  • Adenomyosis (endometriosis of the muscular layer of the uterus), if other methods of treatment do not bring sufficient effect;
  • Oncological diseases of the uterus or endometrium – hysterectomy is the first and sometimes the only treatment and is performed in any case;
  • Uterine bleeding that does not respond to other methods of treatment and may threaten the woman’s life;
  • Prolapse (prolapse) of the uterus;
  • Removal of the uterus is also performed in most operations to treat female pelvic prolapse;
  • Certain precancerous diseases of the uterus.

How is the operation carried out?

We perform surgeries to remove the uterus laparoscopically. Laparoscopy is a modern surgical method in which the operation is performed without a large incision in the anterior abdominal wall – the camera and instruments are inserted through 3-4 small incisions on the skin ranging in size from 5 to 10 millimeters. Thanks to a special surgical camera with optics, the surgeon can see tissues better. High-tech instruments with a diameter of 5 mm allow performing the operation delicately and confidently.

Laparoscopic removal of the uterus usually takes 1 to 3 hours, depending on the size of the uterus and comorbidities.

The operation is performed under general anesthesia, during which the patient is under the supervision of experienced anesthesiologists; all vital signs are monitored using special sensors and displayed on monitors.

Postoperative recovery and recommendations

The standard period of time spent in hospital after laparoscopic hysterectomy is 2-3 days.

According to European and American recommendations, we encourage the early postoperative activation of our patients. Already on the first day after the operation, you will sit down, get up, drink. The next day you can eat light food and walk.

At the time of discharge from hospital, the doctor provides advice on restrictions and subsequent recovery – usually taking a thromboprophylaxis drug for several days after surgery and limiting sexual activity and lifting heavy objects for several weeks after surgery.

Modern methods of treatment at IRIMI Group

In our surgical center, mainly laparoscopic surgical interventions are performed, since this method has a lot of well-known advantages over open access surgery. This applies both to the operation technique itself (better visualization allows high quality operations, reduced tissue trauma, reduced risk of bleeding and other complications), and postoperative recovery (the postoperative period is much easier and faster, our patients return to normal life as soon as 1-2 days after the operation).

For the treatment of particularly complex and non-standard cases, our clinic uses robot-assisted surgery using the Da Vinci Surgical System. This allows us to perform even the most complex surgical interventions in gynecology with particular accuracy and minimal risks.

In addition, we actively use a variety of modern high-tech devices and instruments – from ultrasonic scalpels, new laparoscopic instruments from world manufacturers, the best imported suture materials and modern, safer drugs for anesthesia, to a new operating room opened in 2022, a complete renovation of sterilization equipment and using the only the Da Vinci robotic system in the region.

  • The main function of the uterus is to carry the fetus during pregnancy. If a woman has no reproductive plans, the removal of the uterus does not change her daily or sexual life in any way.
